Although the terms Robot and AI are often used interchangeably, but some aspects need to be distinguished.
So what is the difference between Artificial Intelligence and Robotics?
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a discipline belonging to computer science that studies the theoretical foundations, methodologies and techniques that enable the design of hardware systems and software programs that can provide the computer with performance that reproduces human intelligence and behavior.
Engineer Maurizio La Rocca, CEO & founder of arimas, defined the importance of Artifical Intelligence in the new economical context:
«The digital revolution changes the business approach to the market. AI and related technological systems play a vital and indispensable key role for companies and organizations that want to compete in a global context»
As far as robotics is concerned, it is a branch of engineering that allows an instrument (robot) to perform operations that could be carried out by humans, also allowing a saving of time, cost and human effort. Today robotics, thanks to its multidisciplinarity, is applied in many contexts. Robots are used in a wide range of industries, especially industrial applications and automotive manufacturing. The main applications are:
- biomedical robotics
- home automation
- micro-robotics
- industrial robotics
- billionth home automation
- marine robotics
- telerobotics
- evolutionary robotics
- robotics of entertainment
Artificial intelligence is therefore one of several robotic technologies that are used, for example, in production systems, to automatically manage processes that normally should be managed by people. The benefits offered by these machines are certainly greater safety, shorter times and greater process control.
Relationship between Artificial Intelligence and Robotics
Artificial Intelligence is a set of software based on complex algorithms that aim to develop machines with autonomous learning and adaptation skills inspired by human learning models. These machines perform correlation operations, analysis and development of phenomena external to the software with which it comes into contact. At the basis of AI there are algorithms, computational techniques, solutions, thus able to replicate and automate human behavior.
The mechanism of operation of artificial intelligence is based on three points: the collection of Big data, the type of algorithm and Machine Learning. AI can be applied to many different areas, including robotics.
To date, physical solutions in Italian organizations are still not widespread. Mainly the application categories are: autonomous self-guided vehicles, Autonomous Robot able to move without human intervention and Intelligent Object able to make autonomous decisions according to the conditions of the surrounding environment.
The AI methodologies integrated with the Robotic Process Automation (RPA) systems are increasingly used because they allow to improve the execution of many tasks in terms of efficiency and effectiveness. The RPA then refers to software (bots) programmed to run tasks through automation systems that allow standardize processes ensuring greater control of tasks and reducing the risk of errors.
In this sense AI and RPA are combined to improve the execution of process tasks and to achieve new solutions. In conclusion, artificial intelligence therefore not only replicates the functions of the human mind, but thanks to robotics is able to improve and increase its capabilities and potential.
At arimas®, we strongly believe in technology at the service of man, innovation as a tool to improve people’s quality of life and an ethical approach.
